Publications and Presentations

May 2015 – A 2015 update to the detailed product guide listing biodetection technologies and sampling products is now available. The updated digest provides a comprehensive compilation of commercially available detection devices and products published to help first responders when purchasing equipment and supplies needed to rapidly assess biological threats.

The Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate and the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory just made the revised report - Biodetection Technologies for First Responders: 2015 - available free of charge. The technology summaries in the new version of the report provide web links, equipment specifications, pricing, and annotated references from peer-reviewed publications for over 60 detection technologies and sampling products from over two dozen companies (note that PNNL does not sell or endorse any of these products).

The revised 2015 report can be found below. This report updates the previous edition, which was downloaded more than 13,000 times.

Biodetection Technologies for First Responders: 2014 Edition

April 3, 2013 - DHS S&T and PNNL issued an informative report, “Biodetection Technologies for First Responders,” that summarizes an extensive list of commercially available hand-portable biodetection technologies. The report helps end-users such as firefighters, police officers, and HazMat workers make informed decisions about procuring the right technology for their particular need and circumstance.

Information in the report is primarily provided by the vendor with supplementation by PNNL to include summaries of peer-reviewed publications and reports that evaluate the technology’s performance. The 2013 report can be downloaded below.
